Container Sizes in ml and Litres

Match container capacities to real kitchen tasks, from dressings to batch soups.

Small containers in the 100–250 ml range suit dressings, sauces and single servings of nuts or spices. They are also the right size for marinades and for portioning dips.

Medium containers around 500 ml to 1 litre cover most leftover portions and lunch boxes. A 1-litre container is a common default for a two-person leftover meal.

Large containers of 2 litres and up are for batch soups, stews and meal prep. Dividing a large batch into several medium containers cools the food faster than leaving it in one large one.

Because glass weighs two to three times as much as plastic at the same volume, a 1-litre glass container is noticeably heavier in a bag than a 1-litre polypropylene one. Choose glass for storage at home and plastic for carrying.

Label containers with the date and the contents. The FDA refrigeration window — 2 hours, or 1 hour above 90°F (32°C) — applies regardless of container size.
